University of Nottingham Malaysia: Admissions and Fees Guide 2026

University of Nottingham Malaysia: Admissions and Fees Guide 2026

Aug 30, 2026Updated Sep 19, 2026Ali Bin RizwanGuides8 min read

What Nottingham Malaysia costs in 2026, its fixed-fee policy, entry requirements from foundation up, scholarships and how it compares with Monash Malaysia.

The University of Nottingham Malaysia, usually abbreviated UNM, is the Malaysian campus of the UK's University of Nottingham, a Russell Group member. It currently sits 97th in the QS World University Rankings. UNM held that position in both the 2027 edition, released in June 2026, and the 2026 edition. Students study for University of Nottingham degrees at the 125-acre campus in Semenyih, Selangor, about 45 minutes from Kuala Lumpur, taught and examined to UK standards. For international students starting in September 2026, published tuition runs RM 57,000 a year for business degrees such as finance, accounting and management and RM 67,000 a year for MEng engineering, with the Nottingham Foundation Programme at RM 38,000 in total for international students, and the university operates a fixed-fee policy that locks your rate for the duration of your course.

This guide owns the evaluative question for UNM: is it the right branch campus for you, and what will it cost against alternatives? To browse programmes and campus details, use the University of Nottingham Malaysia profile on Unigeni. For the destination-level picture, start with the study in Malaysia hub. If you are weighing UNM against Monash Malaysia specifically, a short comparison near the end of this guide points you there.

What this guide covers

  • What degree parity at UNM means in practice
  • Indicative 2026 fees by level, plus the fixed-fee and tax rules
  • Entry requirements for foundation and direct degree entry
  • English requirements, including foundation-level scores
  • Scholarships and hardship support open to international students
  • A short UNM versus Monash comparison

Degree parity and the campus

UNM was the first British university to establish a campus in Malaysia, and it remains one of the largest UK university presences in the country. The degree you receive is a University of Nottingham degree, with the same course structures and examination standards as the UK, and the campus community includes Malaysian, international and UK-based staff. Two mobility features matter for planners: students on many programmes can apply to spend a semester or a year at the Nottingham UK campus or the Ningbo China campus, and the university promotes this inter-campus movement as part of the offer. As with any branch campus, your transcript records where you studied; the awarding institution is the University of Nottingham.

Semenyih is a smaller, greener town than Sunway or central Kuala Lumpur. Rent and food run somewhat below Klang Valley hotspots, which softens the total budget even at branch-campus tuition, and the campus itself is residential with most first-years living on or near it.

Indicative fees for 2026

University of Nottingham Malaysia Indicative Annual Fees
Indicative Annual Tuition Fees by Faculty in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR)

These figures are published fees for the September 2026 intake, marked indicative because the university revises them for each academic year.

  • Nottingham Foundation Programme, including the engineering route: RM 35,000 total for Malaysian students and RM 38,000 total for international students. The programme is normally completed over two or three semesters, depending on entry grades.
  • Business and management degrees, for example BSc finance, accounting and management: RM 46,500 per year for Malaysian students, RM 57,000 per year for international students, three-year degree
  • Engineering, for example MEng mechanical engineering: RM 56,500 per year for Malaysian students, RM 67,000 per year for international students, four-year integrated master's

Two rules sit on top of these numbers. First, UNM's fixed tuition fee policy means the per-year rate you enrol at is held for the normal duration of your programme, which removes the annual fee-creep risk that most Malaysian private universities carry. Second, international students pay a 6 percent sales and service tax on tuition, a national rule for private institutions since 1 July 2025, so add that on top of every international figure above. For 2026/27, UNM runs an early-payment incentive instead: pay a full academic year upfront and a 1.5 percent early bird discount applies, with the April 2026 foundation intake treated separately until 14 October 2026. Confirm current terms on the university's fee calculator.

Entry requirements

Foundation

The foundation programmes, including the engineering route of the Nottingham Foundation Programme, plus Business and Management, Science, and Arts and Education, are the standard route for school leavers with SPM, O Levels or equivalents such as WAEC. For the standard engineering route, SPM needs five B grades, including mathematics, physics and additional mathematics. GCSE and IGCSE holders enter with an A in mathematics plus four B grades, including physics. Students with stronger post-school results, around three C grades at A Level, can complete the foundation in two semesters instead of three. Foundation entry also carries an English floor of IELTS 6.0 with no component below 5.5, TOEFL around 80, or a C or 4 in GCSE English.

Direct degree entry

Direct entry to degrees is assessed against UK-equivalent grades. For BSc finance, accounting and management, the published 2026 requirement is BCC at A Levels (excluding Critical Thinking and General Studies) or BC+C+ at STPM (excluding Pengajian Am), with a grade B in mathematics at SPM, GCSE or IGCSE level. Comparable programmes accept the International Baccalaureate, diplomas and other national qualifications assessed case by case, and engineering degrees expect mathematics and physics at senior secondary level. As everywhere in this guide, these are floors: scholarship-competitive applicants usually sit above them.

English requirements

Foundation entry needs IELTS 6.0 with no band below 5.5. Most undergraduate degrees ask for IELTS 6.5 overall with components at 6.0 or above, though some courses set different scores, so the course page is the deciding source. Students who completed their prior qualification in English may be exempted from testing on evidence, and UNM accepts standard alternatives such as TOEFL and PTE at equivalent levels.

Scholarships and support

UNM's published scholarship list is unusually explicit about who can apply, and several schemes are open to all nationalities, including Nigerian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi applicants.

  • Foundation High Achiever's Scholarship: for foundation entrants, assessed on pre-university results
  • High Achievers' Scholarship: for new undergraduate students, open to all nationalities, tied to the admissions deadline
  • Dean's Excellence Scholarship: open to all undergraduates, with no closing date, awarded on progression between academic years
  • Sibling Scholarship: fee support where a family member is also studying at UNM
  • ASEAN International Student Bursary: restricted to ASEAN nationals other than Malaysians
  • Hardship Fund: emergency support with application windows roughly every two months

The university does not publish percentage values on the central scholarship page, and third-party listings put awards such as the Dean's Excellence Scholarship around 25 percent of tuition, with some foundation awards higher. Treat those percentages as estimates and ask admissions for the current award letter, because values are set by faculty and intake year.

Nottingham Malaysia or Monash Malaysia

Nottingham Malaysia vs Monash Malaysia: Branch Campus Face-Off
UK Russell Group vs Australian Go8 Flagship Branch Campuses Compared

Both are full branch campuses of prestigious parents, and both charge a clear premium over local private universities, so the choice usually comes down to three differences. Ranking and brand: Monash's parent sits higher in the QS table, 31st against Nottingham's 97th, which matters in markets where employers screen hard on rank. Programme fit: Monash Malaysia carries pharmacy and the five-year medical programme that UNM does not, while UNM offers integrated MEng engineering degrees in four years and UK-style business degrees. Cost behaviour: UNM's fixed-fee policy locks your tuition for the whole degree, while Monash reviews fees annually, which matters over a four-year engineering degree. Location is the soft factor: Bandar Sunway is an urban student hub, Semenyih a quieter campus town with lower living costs. If Monash is on your list, read the Monash Malaysia admissions and fees guide before deciding, and compare the two offers in writing, including scholarship terms, rather than headline tuition.

Questions applicants ask

Is the UNM degree identical to the UK degree? It is the same University of Nottingham degree with the same course standards, and your record shows the Malaysia campus. Exchange to the UK or China campus is available on many programmes.

What does fixed tuition actually fix? The per-year rate you enrol at is held for the normal duration of your programme. It does not cap the 6 percent service tax, which is set nationally.

Can WAEC get me into UNM? WAEC is treated as an O Level equivalent, which qualifies you for foundation entry with the required grades, including mathematics and sciences for the engineering track. Direct degree entry needs post-school qualifications such as A Levels.

How much cheaper is Semenyih to live in? Meaningfully cheaper than central Kuala Lumpur on rent and food, though exact figures depend on accommodation choice. Budget from the national band of RM 1,500 to RM 2,500 a month and expect the lower half in Semenyih.

Do scholarships apply automatically? Some, like the Dean's Excellence Scholarship, are awarded on progression without a separate application; others require applying by the admissions deadline. Ask for the scholarship schedule when you receive your offer.
