How to Secure a Full Scholarship at a UAE University

How to Secure a Full Scholarship at a UAE University

Full funding in the UAE is concentrated: Khalifa graduate awards, MBZUAI fellowships, NYUAD aid, AUS awards. What each covers and how to win one.

A full scholarship at a UAE university is an award that covers tuition completely and, at the strongest end, adds living support such as a stipend, housing, insurance, visa costs and flights. Studying in the UAE is not cheap: annual tuition at international branch campuses commonly runs from about AED 40,000 to 120,000, and student living costs in Dubai average AED 4,500 to 6,500 per month on top. So a genuine full ride is worth a serious, well-timed application effort.

Where the money actually sits: complete funding is concentrated in graduate research programs, at Khalifa University in Abu Dhabi and at MBZUAI, the AI-focused graduate university, where full scholarships are the default for admitted research students. At undergraduate level, NYU Abu Dhabi meets full demonstrated financial need for admitted students of any citizenship, and American University of Sharjah runs a small number of complete-tuition awards. Everywhere else, most international students combine partial merit awards. This page maps the named opportunities, what each covers, and how to build a competitive file. Visa rules interact with funding choices, so also read our study in the UAE overview.

Where full funding actually exists

UAE Major Full Scholarship Matrix
Comparison of Major UAE Scholarship Programmes: Khalifa, MBZUAI, NYU Abu Dhabi, and AUS

Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi

Khalifa University's graduate scholarships are the most generous in the country for research students. The university's own scholarship pages state that master's and PhD awards for UAE nationals and international students can include full or partial tuition coverage, textbooks, accommodation, medical insurance, visa support and travel to and from the UAE for students abroad, with PhD scholarships adding a monthly stipend, conference participation and, subject to funding, international research internships. A dedicated joint program with the China Scholarship Council covers full tuition plus a stipend of AED 9,200 per month for Chinese nationals, with flights, free accommodation or housing assistance up to AED 2,000 per month, textbooks, visa fees and insurance, conditional on maintaining a CGPA of 3.5.

Eligibility is merit-based and assessed with your admission application: there is no separate scholarship form for the core awards. Undergraduate international students are served by tiered awards, with the top tier reported to cover full tuition and textbooks; confirm current tiers with the admissions office. In short: if you have a strong engineering or science background, Khalifa should be on your list before any Dubai campus.

MBZUAI, Abu Dhabi

The Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence admits only graduate students, in machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing and adjacent fields, and states that all accepted full-time students receive a full scholarship, covering 100 per cent of tuition plus a monthly allowance and benefits such as housing support. Admission is the scholarship: no separate funding application exists. The trade-off is selectivity in a narrow domain: you need a STEM degree, a competitive GPA, and evidence of mathematical or programming depth. Priority deadlines for the following year's intake fall in mid-January, so a September start means applying more than a year ahead.

NYU Abu Dhabi

NYUAD is the one UAE institution where a student from a low-income family anywhere can attend free of charge by right of admission. The university states that it is need-blind for all applicants regardless of citizenship and meets the full demonstrated need of admitted students, with aid calculated from the family's finances via the CSS Profile, available from October 1 each cycle. Acceptance rates are low; the student body of roughly 1,800 represents more than 120 countries. For South Asian, African and MENA students with top grades and strong English, this is one of the most generous offers anywhere in the world, and the application runs through the Common App.

American University of Sharjah

AUS publishes merit scholarships of 10 to 20 per cent of tuition and lab fees for new first-time students, renewing with continued strong academic performance. Its top award, the Chancellor's Scholarship, covers 100 per cent of tuition and lab fees plus on-campus housing, medical insurance and an application fee waiver, for up to 10 students per year, with an important restriction: it targets applicants who completed their secondary education in the UAE. Students completing school in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nigeria or Egypt therefore compete for the merit tiers rather than the full ride. Higher awards of up to half tuition have been reported for exceptional performers; verify the current structure on the university's financial aid pages.

Canadian University Dubai

CUD is a partial-award institution. Academic scholarships for international students reach up to 50 per cent of tuition based on secondary-school performance, with tiered percentages tied to grades, and graduate admission expecting a CGPA of about 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Around 85 per cent of its students are international, which makes the award culture familiar to applicants from our regions. See the Canadian University Dubai profile for programs and entry requirements.

Eligibility patterns

Read across these programs, four patterns recur:

  • Level: complete funding clusters at master's and PhD level; bachelor's students have fewer full rides, mainly NYUAD and a handful of named awards
  • GPA: funded students typically hold 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale; Khalifa's joint program explicitly requires maintaining 3.5, and Golden Visa thresholds sit at the same level
  • Field: engineering, science and AI dominate full funding, reflecting where UAE research money flows; business and humanities awards are mostly partial
  • Citizenship: most awards are open to all nationalities, with exceptions such as Khalifa's CSC track for Chinese nationals and some UAE-national-only programs; AUS's full ride requires UAE secondary schooling

Building a winning application

UAE Scholarship Strategy Pillars
Four Core Strategic Pillars for Winning Highly Competitive UAE University Scholarships
  • Start 12 to 15 months early. MBZUAI's priority deadline is mid-January for the next intake; NYUAD's aid machinery (Common App plus CSS Profile) rewards applicants who begin in the summer before senior year; Khalifa's PhD deadlines for a September intake fall around the previous September
  • Lock the academic evidence. Certified transcripts, projected grades if you apply early, and English scores (IELTS or TOEFL) aligned to each program's floor; a retake in October still reaches January deadlines
  • Write a research-shaped essay. For graduate awards, your statement should name a problem you want to work on and why that department is where to work on it; generic ambition essays lose to specific ones
  • Choose recommenders who can compare. A teacher or supervisor who can say you are among the top few students they have taught, with an example, outweighs a senior name with vague praise
  • Prepare for the interview. MBZUAI and NYUAD interview seriously: rehearse a two-minute account of a project you completed, what failed, and what you would change
  • Keep documents attestation-ready. Offer-holders move fast; transcripts and degree certificates that can be attested quickly protect your place

A counsellor's main contribution at this stage is sequencing: matching your profile to the three or four programs where you are genuinely competitive, then protecting deadlines. If that support would help, you can talk to a counsellor through Unigeni at no cost to you.

Realistic odds and the stacking strategy

Be clear-eyed: full awards at the named institutions go to a small share of applicants, because the same file that wins them also wins admission elsewhere. MBZUAI and NYUAD admit in the low single digits of applicants by most accounts. The rational plan is not one lottery ticket but a portfolio:

  • Two ambitious full-funding applications where you fit the profile exactly
  • Two solid partial-award applications, such as AUS merit tiers or CUD scholarships, where partial awards of 10 to 50 per cent are realistically attainable
  • One funded-alternative application outside the UAE, so a thin year does not end the plan

Partial awards stack with other resources: a 20 per cent merit award, family savings and approved part-time work under a MOHRE student permit together close much of the gap. Our scholarships overview collects current opportunities across both of our destination countries. Frequently asked questions

Can international students get fully funded places in the UAE?

Yes, mainly at graduate level. Khalifa University's master's and PhD awards and MBZUAI's automatic full scholarships are open to international students and can cover tuition, housing, insurance and more. At undergraduate level, NYU Abu Dhabi meets full demonstrated need for admitted students of any citizenship.

What GPA do I need for a full scholarship?

Expect to need 3.5 out of 4.0 or higher to be competitive. Khalifa's funded joint program requires maintaining a 3.5 CGPA, and the same figure anchors UAE graduate Golden Visa eligibility. Awards at the 3.0 level exist but rarely cover everything.

Do UAE scholarships cover living costs?

The strongest ones do. Khalifa's PhD scholarships include a monthly stipend, accommodation and insurance; MBZUAI's package includes a monthly allowance and housing support; NYUAD's need-based aid is calculated to cover what your family genuinely cannot pay. Merit discounts at teaching-focused universities cover tuition only.

When should I apply?

For a September start, begin the previous summer or earlier. NYUAD financial aid documents open on October 1, MBZUAI's priority deadline is in mid-January, and Khalifa's research deadlines fall roughly a year ahead of enrolment. Scholarship money follows early, complete files.

What if I only win a partial award?

That is the common outcome and it still changes the math. A 20 to 50 per cent tuition reduction combined with family funds, sponsor support or permitted part-time work makes many programs feasible. Partial awards also renew annually, so strong university performance keeps them alive.
